I really like McDonalds coffee, but I can’t afford to eat out every morning, so I wish I could make my own. But I really don’t know how very well, and usually buy instant coffee. I ‘would’ buy a new coffee pot, if I knew I could make real good coffee, but not sure what to buy or how to make it. Thanks for any advice!
I NEVER “made coffee” at home until this last year because I was the only one who really drank it. In fact, I didn’t even own a coffee maker….I would borrow one when we entertained and have someone else make the coffee.
I usually just got my coffee at our local Starbucks coffee shop, etc.
My 40 year old son (a former pro-chef) makes his own coffee at home every morning and when I started cutting back on eating out (too much of my money goes to the gas pumps these days)…..he got me started making my own coffee at home. I loved his coffee and asked him to show me how he made it.
Anyway…..I learned that fresh ground…that’s fresh ground for each pot…is the only way to go if you only make one pot of coffee a day. Other wise your bag (or can) of pre-ground coffee will be stale long before you ever finish it all.
Also….while some people insist that a cup of coffee HAS to be freshly brewed to taste good ….I found that if you start out with good brand of freshly ground coffee…. the pot will taste good all day! Fresh ground for each pot is the key.
.
Anyway….I bought one of those little electric coffee bean grinders at Wal-mart (mine cost about 21 bucks) a cheapee electric coffee maker (under 20 bucks), a reuseable coffee filter (6 bucks…I hate the paper ones) and a one pound bag of Starbuck brand “whole bean” House Blend at my local grocery store (9 bucks). (They sell this coffee at most Wal-mart stores with a grocery section too.)
I like my coffee a bit on the stronge side so I grind up 4 “tablespoon size” scoops of beans for a full pot (10 cups) of water and 2 scoops for a half pot.
Just reminder to wash the bowl of the grinder out after each use to prevent old stale coffee grinds with getting mixed into the fresh ones each morning.
Anyway, I now make coffee that even my husband will drink as well as my 34 year son (who both normally hate coffee) when he comes over.
How much coffee ground for an espresso machine do I use in a drip machine?
I bought some coffee that was pre-ground to a fine texture for espresso machines. How much should I use for my drip machine? Half of what I would use with a coarser grind?
I would say temper it to your taste, but definitely use less. because the coffee is ground finer there is more surface area exposed to the water so more flavor is extracted from the coffee. depending on the coffee and your personal taste this can be a good or bad thing. it most likely will make your coffee taste bitter since the grinds are in contact with water for a longer time than if you were brewing it with an espresso maker. I would either get a stove top espresso maker (relatively cheap) or junk that coffee and get something ground for your type of machine. Ideally, you will get your best cup of coffee if you buy whole beans and get a grinder and grind just what you need right before you brew it.

either beans or ground coffee. Just what anyone feels fits for them and their understanding of the question.
I think the best coffee in the world is grown in Colombia, but that is my preference. Certainly the coffees with the best flavors are from arabica plants grown at altitudes of around one mile above sea level.
The best tasting coffee to drink has to be made from fresh roasted beans that have been ground just before brewing and drinking. The roaster who I have found provides the freshest and best tasting beans delivered to my home each month is Don Francisco. They have a great catalog with a wide selection of great tasting, freshly roasted coffees for every taste.
I grind at the same setting, use the same espresso machine (Gaggia classic), tamp pretty much the same each time. I guess volume of coffee used varies slightly from time to time. Is this enough to explain the vast diffrerences I get?
Crema is an artifact of Coffee grind, Coffee blend, Water cleanliness/chemical content, temperature, and pressure.
Check all of them to make sure that they are the same from pull to pull.
I have found that many “at home” machines are not very consistent with water temp and pressure from pull to pull.
